CRT Careers Day a huge success!

The CRT organized a Careers Day to give students a broad perspective on the range of career options that are open to them!

The event took place in RCSI on 25th Aug and was very much appreciated by the students. There were excellent keynote talks from

  • Eppie Jones – National Office for Genetics and Genomics
  • Teresa Brophy – Science Foundation Ireland
  • Emmeline Hill – Plusvital
  • Lucy Burkitt-Gray – UK Biobank

There were 5 breakout sessions on careers in

(1)Academia
(2)Startups, VCs
(3)Health research/Clinical settings
(4) Industry
(5) Public Sector, NGOs and careers outside Genomics Data Science

These sessions were very popular as they provided students with an  informal opportunity to quiz over 20 panelists about their experience and careers in the different sectors.

Each breakout sessions had a student volunteer who reported back on the session to all attendees. Each student rapporteur also provided a written report which, when combined, are a very useful source of information  on careers in the different sectors,  the different types of roles available, the pros and cons of working in different sectors and the skills in demand – the reports can be found here.

In addition lunch and coffee breaks enabled students to network with participants and potential future employers and to also discuss the opportunities for placements. Overall the event was very successful and both students and participants had an enjoyable and informative time !
